Is A Desktop Essential

Discussion in 'IT & Technology' started by LucidCaledonia, Dec 6, 2015.

  1. Is a desktop essential for business, or can you cope with a tablet or smartphone.

I find that it is much more user friendly to use a computer, especially with multi-tasking. The ease of a mouse and keyboard, and ease of switching tabs makes it seem essential to me, though some disagree.

  2. It depends on the nature of the business. For me being a web designer, a desktop is absolutely mandatory. I wouldn't recommend one for a carpet cleaner though.

  3. Yep I just couldn't cope without a keyboard and a mouse - maybe that makes me a dinosaur :p

Tablets are great and I do have one but only for browsing the internet and watching movies and stuff.

Whenever I need to do "proper" work it's always the desktop I'm sat at :)

  4. Unless you've got an app on your tablet or smartphone which allows you to comfortably handle the likes of your books etc, I'd recommend at least having a half decent laptop handy.

  5. I'm a writer, and it's a must for me. Sure, you can write on an iPad, but it just isn't the same. It's something psychological - I get writers block far less on my desktop than if i ever attempt to write on my iPad.

  6. I find writing on a touchpad very slow, and corrections are far worse. You can't just drag and highlight like you can with a mouse. While greasy fingers are not exactly ideal for a keyboard, they make it impossible on a touchpad.

When writing content or doing design work you need a desktop and a quiet place to work. I find laptops are useful if you are maybe working from home and have difficulty finding some peace and quiet or you need access to files or to do work on the move.
